After the Google Buzz of introducing the +1 followed by the Google+ Business Page and finally the Google Search Plus Your World (Search+), it is still unsure how does the +1 affect your SEO.

The +1 button works the same way as Facebook’s “Like,” but has more power on your page ranks over the simple “Like” on Facebook.  The +1 button is like an approval stamp or recommendation from users.  When a user +1 a webpage, it will appear in the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) stating that this website got +1’ed by people in your circle.

The +1 is still a mystery on how it will affect a webpage’s SEO; however, the following shows the indirect effect of the +1.

+1’s Effect on SEO

+1 doesn’t directly affect SEO like backlinks, Title Tags and other factors that Google look at when it ranks your page.  However, having a +1 is like a recommendation from someone who have been to your website and thinks that it is a good website.

For those that are not logged in, they will see the number of +1s a page have gotten if they included the +1 button to their website.

As you can see in the above picture, Mashable gotten 52,239 +1s, which means there are 52,239 people who recommended this site.  Rather than clicking on the other links which less +1s or maybe none, a searcher will be more likely to click on Mashable’s link due to the huge amount of recommendations.

For those who are logged in, you will also see the number of +1 a webpage gotten and you can also see who in your circle +1’ed that page as well.  If someone a user know +1’ed a webpage, it gives the webpage more credit since a person you trust recommended it.

As you can see, although the +1 is not a factor that Google looks at when it ranks pages, but it still has a lot of power to convince searchers to click on a certain link on the SERP.

While we are still unsure of what other ways +1 can affect our search results, at the meantime, here are a few things you can do to prepare for future updates.

  • Add the +1 share button to your webpage and other contents you have online
  • Encourage visitors to +1 your webpage
  • Create a Google+ Business Page
